Flights at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport were expected to return to normal Tuesday at 10 a.m., weather permitting. The airport remained open on Monday despite heavy squalls and strong winds associated with the season’s first big lake effect snow event.A total of 80 flights were canceled, however, according to Jackie Mayo, spokesperson for the airport.
Continental and United airlines pulled about half their flights, mainly because of the wind. Most of the cancelled flights were on smaller planes, but some were to big destinations like Washington, D.C., Indianapolis and Pittsburgh.Mayo said there were minimal delays for the flights that were able to depart.Affected customers were re-booked.
Mayo encouraged all CLE travelers to call their airlines in advance. Also, motorists should give themselves plenty of time to make the trip to Hopkins.Meanwhile, things ran more smoothly at the Akron-Canton Regional Airport.Kristie VanAuken, senior vice president and chief communications officer, told Fox 8 News that CAK was unaffected by the snowstorm.
