Nearly three dozen flights were either canceled, delayed, or diverted from the Sacramento International Airport on Wednesday because of dense fog that lingered over the city even close to the noon hour.Officials at the Sacramento International Airport said by 9:20 a.m., however, the dense fog had lifted. The problem started at 8 a.m. this morning. The low visibility affected departing and arriving flights.Fifteen departing flights were delayed, three arriving flights were delayed, seven flights were diverted to other airports and four flights were canceled all together, according to an airport spokesperson.Inside the airport’s new Terminal B, families waited during the late morning hours for a flight from Seattle that could not land in Sacramento because of the fog.
It was diverted to Oakland, and not long after, families and friends of passengers said they would drive to Oakland to pick up their loved ones rather than wait for a second flight from Oakland to Sacramento.Others were impacted by heavy fog as they drove to the airport to catch flights. Drivers from all over Northern California said they were most impacted by fog when they reached the Central Valley. The impacted areas included Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Woodland and Fairfield.Airport officials say this is the first time since Thanksgiving flights were canceled or delayed because of the weather.Officials won’t know if fog will continue to be a problem Thursday until the morning.
