Flights are Canceled

Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU) said Monday a four-hour strike planned for Tuesday by a union representing baggage handlers, ground staff and caterers will affect over 6,100 passengers due to flight cancellations and delays. The Australian airline said that despite minimizing the expected impact of the strike by using larger wide-body aircraft and deploying management staff to operational roles it has been forced to cancel 28 flights Tuesday and delay a further 27 by up to 35 minutes.

There could be further delays over the next two days as a result of the flow-on effect from the strikes, it said.Qantas said the Transport Workers Union, which has about 3,800 members, is striking over pay and work hours.Separate strike action by the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association in Sydney Tuesday will see over 800 passengers affected by six flight delays, Qantas said. Over 1,000 passengers have been affected since the engineers commenced daily one-hour strikes in August, it said.A union representing pilots is also taking milder forms of industrial action against Qantas. The three unions are concerned about moves by the company to set up offshore Asian subsidiaries to save costs and cut jobs.
