Continental Airlines restart flights between Guam and Sendai,Japan

Continental Airlines said Wednesday that it will resume twice-weekly flights between Guam and Sendai, Japan, on Oct. 2. Sendai’s airport was closed after the March 11 earthquake that struck Japan. The airport reopened April 13. The Continental flights mark the first resumption of regular service by a foreign airline at Sendai Airport since its reopening.

Continental is a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings Inc., which began offering Guam-Sendai flights 21 years ago.United Continental has worked with the American Red Cross to gather monetary contributions and donations of frequent flyer miles to help those affected by the earthquake. The company said cash donations from more than 23,000 customers and employees exceed $2.5 million, and loyalty program members have donated more than 63 million miles.The company’s subsidiaries United Airlines and Continental Airlines together operate 169 weekly flights to nine destinations in Japan.Shares of United Continental fell 2 cents to $24.50 in morning trading.
