Once deprived of the latest news headlines in the air, passengers on Singapore Airlines flights can now get them during a flight, thanks to a live news ticker provided by Channel NewsAsia.Within the next few months, 40 per cent of all SIA flights will have the service, including all long-haul flights.
Mr Tan Pee Teck, SIA senior vice-president products and services, said: We’ve already got games, movies, music. So I think introducing a news ticker tape was the most natural thing to move into. We know from feedback from our business travellers in particular, they wanted more up-to-date information on what’s happening around the world, around areas that affect their business. So that’s how we got into this tie-up.
Fresh news headlines are provided every 30 minutes from the regional news channel’s award-winning interactive news department.Mr Yeo Hock Lin, vice-president, E-News, MediaCorp, said:It is basically through the use of Internet technology. A file is sent to SIA’s servers and in a way they use their own infrastructure to deliver it to the planes that are in the air. Basically, it’s using communications technology to deliver as quickly as possible, things that are updated in the newsroom here.SIA says it plans to introduce in-flight connectivity later in the year, which would enable passengers to enjoy more news features.
