Flights to Tokyo delayed

Several travel agencies here reported that Singaporeans now in Japan on packaged tours were fine as they did not go to Sendai. It is the city closest to the epicentre of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck on Friday.

But it was a scramble for many Japan-bound travellers at Changi Airport who had to deal with flight diversions, delays and cancellations. In Tokyo, Haneda airport was open only for a limited number of landings on Friday. The city’s Narita airport was closed until yesterday night, when it was reopened partially.
The cancelled flights included Singapore Airlines’ SQ634, which was supposed to head to Haneda at 3.40pm yesterday. Some 250 passengers were affected.
Said a spokesman for SIA: ‘Accommodation and meals were provided for the passengers.’
