If you’re planning on catching a flight today, you might want to reach for a shovel instead. The Capital Region could receive up to a foot of snow by the time the storm winds down early this evening. As of 10 a.m., at least 55 flights in and out of Albany International Airport had been canceled. The list is widespread and expected to grow as the eastern part of the country gets hit with yet another whopper of a storm.
The way things look, it’s going to get worse before it gets better, said Doug Myers, airport spokesman. The airport handles 124 flights a day.Passengers impacted by the cancellations are being booked on later flights, Myers said.
The storm should drop 10-12 inches in the immediate Albany area before it winds down at about 7 p.m., said Vasil Koleci, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany.
As of 7 a.m, Schenectady had received 3.8 inches, Milton in Saratoga County had received 1.8 inches, and Stephentown, Rensselar County, had received 2 inches.Columbia County and other areas south of Albany will receive less accumulation as conditions there shift to a mix of snow and rain later this afternoon, Koleci said.Amtrak is running as scheduled. Capital District Transportation Authority is reporting delays of at least 15 minutes on all of its bus routes.Surprisingly, Koleci said, this year’s to-date snowfall of 63.8 inches isn’t far off from the norm of 62.5 inches. It just seems like a lot because we never fully recovered from two big back-to-back storms, he said.
