Heavy fog, delays flights

The dense fog that has blanketed the area the last few days is expected to continue until Sunday.Residents also should expect fog advisories for another month. This is our fog season, said Jack Cullen with the National Weather Service in Mobile, Ala. It will be dense like this for the remainder of the week, but it will last for a while. Typically, it will last until mid-morning, but there could be days when it will last throughout the day.

Cullen said the cool air over the Gulf of Mexico hits the warmer air at dew point and causes the fog. That has meant slow going for motorists and air travelers.Greg Donovan, Okaloosa County’s airports director, said Friday that seven flights were canceled and two others were delayed at Northwest Florida Regional Airport. What we need to have is a half-mile of visibility and a cloud ceiling of 200 feet or greater,Donovan said.Once we get that we’ll be back in business.

The airlines are working with all the passengers to accommodate them and re-sync them to get them going, Donovan added. The fog has been causing some operation issues.According to a news release from the National Weather Service, dense fog advisories likely will be issued through Sunday. Drivers are urged to slow down, use their headlights and leave a greater distance between vehicles.Meteorologist Keith Williams said the fog should ease up as warmer temperatures become more consistent. It’s the time of year,Williams said.Once it gets a little bit warmer the fog will, hopefully, burn up and we’ll be back to being able to see in front of us.
