Alaska Airlines started offering free Wi-Fi access on services between Fairbanks and Anchorage. The Gogo service is being provided by Aircell and will be free until the network is completed to include southeast Alaska later this year. The carrier says that over 70% of their Boeing 737 planes have been equipped with the Gogo system since May of this year, and the installation should be completed on the entire fleet by early next year. This service will allow passengers who own Wi-Fi enabled devices to browse the internet, connect to virtual private networks and send and receive email. This is a great opportunity for travelers on journeys to these two cities to test the Gogo system. The airline’s other flights already offer the service in the lower 48 states, but passengers have to pay $4.95 or more per flight to use it. The prices vary depending on the type of wireless device they are using and how long the flight is.Also last week, Alaska Air Group, the parent of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, said that there was a 40% rise in 3rd quarter profit, along with many other airlines that have reported an increase in profits due to a jump in travel demand. Chairman and chief executive Bill Ayer said that this has been their best quarter ever, with record earnings from higher load factors and traffic.Net income increased from $87.6 million to $122.4 million compared to the same quarter last year. Profit would have been $118.1 million excluding special items. Revenue jumped 10% from $967.4 million last year to $1.07 billion. Load factor rose 3%, but yield fell slightly to 13.96 cents a mile.
