Tiger Airways will start flying from Avalon Airport in November, with the Gold Coast the low-cost carrier’s inaugural destination from Melbourne’s second gateway.Flights between Avalon and the south Queensland holiday destination were due to start on November 10, the airline said in a statement on Thursday.The carrier will base two Airbus A320 planes at the airport, making Avalon Tiger’s third Australian base, following Tullamarine and Adelaide.A further two planes will come to Victoria as part of a five-aircraft deal with the state government.

The Singapore-based carrier has been flying in Australia since November 2007 and currently has nine planes in its local fleet three at Adelaide and six at Tullamarine.
Tiger Airways president and group chief executive Tony Davis said last month the airline’s Australian operations achieved a break even operating result in its second full year of operation.Avalon Airport is located about 55 kilometres west of Melbourne and is owned by Linfox.Qantas Airways Ltd’s low-cost offshoot Jetstar began flying from Avalon in June 2004.The airport is also used as a Qantas maintenance facility and has hosted the Australian international air show.
